1150 pages long book ‘Cooperative Development in Independent India (December 1947-May 2012)’
written by co-authors Dr. Balram Jakhad and Dr RC Dwivedi is a witness record
of the growth and evolution of the great
system of Indian social and administrative life. As the patriarchs in their plus
eighties still strive to stand for the ‘regeneration of ethical values’ in the
movement, there are definite challenges before it now for its survival as well.
Where do political parties ever cooperate even when there is the pride and
property of the Nation at stake these days! As a matter of fact, the movement
is now seen more as a tool of meeting the ends of the ruling political party
only. This brief history can thus be summarized as the history of a tussle
between the ‘autonomy’ of the movement as against the ‘control’ and ‘supervision’
of the State!
But the virtual record in it is much more than just the
history. It goes deep well into the spirit and tells how it helped the economy
of a developing country rise fast with wings unfettered.
From the point of its early shape by the state
governments as their sole subject till the 111 Constitutional Amendment of
making it people’s fundamental right and the directive principle of the State,
Cooperation does deserve a greater attention of all those who wish India emerge
as the world Economic Power. This book is a definite pointer of this direction.
I wish that all cooperative institutions not only go
possess it but also offer their officers and office bearers reach it for their
benefit and the betterment of the people and society.
